What the product codes actually are

Every one of these gets written on a tin and then repeated in notes until nobody remembers what class of thing it is.

A code tells you nothing about what it is. “DV-5000” could be a paint, a putty or a primer from the name alone — it is a putty. Check before you open the tin.

  • DV- is Davies. B- is Boysen. Megacryl is a Davies product line, not one product.

Fill & fasten

Filling screw and nail holes before paint

The go-to method for any painted trim, board, or panel. Learned the hard way on the masters bedroom doorway, September 2026.

Air-dry fillers shrink. Two-part fillers do not. Depth picks the class — everything else follows.

Glazing putty, spackle and latex concrete putty cure by losing solvent or water, so they lose volume. Stacking thin coats into a deep hole never works: each coat shrinks back and the dimple regenerates. Polyester and epoxy cure by chemical reaction with essentially no volume loss, so they fill full depth in one shot.

The method — same for every class

  1. Clean the hole. No dust, loose fibres, or oil.
  2. Overfill proud, one shot. Filling flush guarantees a dimple after cure.
  3. Dress flush. Sand when filler and substrate are similar hardness; scrape at cheese-hard when the filler is harder.
  4. Spot-prime the fill before topcoat. Every filler flashes under sheen otherwise.

Upstream beats every filler

  • Set the head only 1–1.5 mm below the surface. Finish carpentry does not dig 3 mm craters and then solve them. At that depth the easy tier works in one pass and nothing gets mixed.

Only two things ever make a fill fail

  • Shrinkage — wrong filler class for the depth. You can feel the dimple with a fingertip.
  • Flashing — no spot prime. Surface is flat but reads as a ring because it drinks paint differently. You can only see it.
  • Diagnose with a fingertip in raking light. Felt means shrinkage; seen-only means flashing. Different fixes.

Choosing between the two-part fillers

Why body filler goes gummy

  • Under-catalyzed polyester stays soft forever. It is a chemical failure, not slow drying — waiting never fixes it. Scrape it out.
  • The hardener cream dies in the tube long before the filler does. Separated, watery or crumbly cream means the tube is dead.
  • Mix on plastic or metal. Never cardboard — it drinks resin and shifts the ratio the wrong way.
  • A correct batch is sandable in 15–20 min in Philippine heat. Not hard at 30 min means the batch is dead.

Mixes

Knauf UB888 jointing compound

Premium Jointing powder, also sold as USG Boral / “Boral powder”. The embed and body coats on fibre cement joints.

2 parts powder : 1 part water, by volume. Water into the pail first, then powder.

Slaking — the step that buys the window

Slaking is letting the powder sit in the water untouched so it soaks itself, before stirring at all. Same word as slaking a thirst: the powder drinks.

Dry powder does not wet instantly. Drop it in and the outside of every clump wets while the inside stays dry. Stir straight away and you are forcing water in mechanically, which takes far more stirring — and stirring is what accelerates the set. Wait instead, and capillary action does the same job for free.

  1. Water in the container first.
  2. Powder in on top. Do not touch it.
  3. Wait 2–3 minutes. The mound darkens as water wicks up through it.
  4. Ready when no dry pale islands are left on the surface.
  5. Now mix — it comes together smooth in a fraction of the stirring.
  • Skipping the slake is what causes the short window. You get lumps, you stir harder to chase them, and the extra stirring collapses the set time. Those two or three minutes of standing around are the cheapest working time you will ever buy.

“Skim” — pin the word before using it

In these notes, skim means DV-5000 over the joint bands. Not the whole wall, and not any other product.

  • The only whole-wall step in the joint stack is the primer — spot-prime the joints and cut edges early, full-prime everything before paint.
  • Whole-wall skimming solves one thing: joint banding. Board face and joint band differ in texture and porosity, so under a sheen the bands can telegraph as faint stripes — the same flashing mechanism as an unprimed filler spot. Semi-gloss is the worst case. If the light rakes hard across a wall, that is when the whole-wall version earns its cost.

Recoat gates — set is not dry

Set means the reaction has finished and it is hard. Dry means the water has actually left. They are hours apart.

  • Two different tests for two different gates. Fingernail tells you it is set. Colour tells you it is dry. Never use one for the other.
  • Test on an offcut of the feather edge, not in the middle of a finished joint.
  • Gypsum warms as it sets, then cools. A batch that has gone cool again has finished reacting.
  • All three Knauf coats fit in one day, because coat-to-coat only needs set. The calendar days in a joint job are material transitions — Knauf to Davies, Davies to sand, primer to paint — not coats.
  • The Davies skim is optional indoors. The nook was finished on Knauf alone — sanded, primed and topcoated with no skim, and it held. Skip it and the overnight dry gate goes with it. Verified by doing it
  • Knauf sands beautifully. The old advice that setting compounds sand hard, so the last coat must be Davies, does not hold for UB888. It cuts easily — but it throws a lot of dust
  • That dust is the catch, and it is the whole reason to care. Skipping the skim does not save you work, it moves the work into dust removal. The skim’s real job was burying the dust-generating surface, not sandability. Vacuum, damp cloth wrung hard, then check in raking light before the primer tin is opened
  • Coat 3 is conditional. Skip any joint that already sits flat under the 350 blade. Streaky but flat is finished.
  • Do not sand between Knauf coats. Scrape at cheese-hard instead. One light 120 pass before the skim, and that is all.
  • Two different dusts, two different hazards. Gypsum joint dust is calcium sulfate — a nuisance dust, so wear a mask but do not panic. Crystalline silica is the fibre cement board itself, which is why machine-sanding across feather edges that run to zero on bare board is the thing to avoid. “Only a bit dusty” describes the gypsum, not the board
  • Dust on set gypsum is the peel risk, not moisture. Sanding dust is chemically identical to the joint, so the surface looks clean while carrying a loose powder layer — primer wets it to slurry and roller shear lifts it. Vacuum, then damp cloth wrung hard, and never re-roll a section that has started to tack.

Why the window is short, and what widens it

The short window is the price of not shrinking. Setting-type compounds react chemically, so they can go on thick and hold their volume. Air-dry compounds stay workable forever and shrink. There is no product that does both.

Gypsum crystals nucleate and then interlock all at once, so it goes from plastic to rigid quickly rather than tapering off. That part is chemistry, not technique. These three lower it, and none of them cost anything:

  • More water sets slower, less water sets faster and harder. So mixing stiffer does not buy window — it shortens the reaction. Stay at 2:1 and spend the effort on temperature and stirring.
  • Never re-temper a stiffening batch — and now the reason: adding water genuinely would buy set time, which is exactly what makes it tempting. But by then the crystals have begun interlocking, and stirring water back in shears that structure apart. You get the working time back and a soft, weak, porous joint with it.
  • A window that collapses to ~10 min is contamination, not ratio. Set gypsum in the working pan seeds a flash set. Use flexible plastic food containers, two rotating, rinsed between batches — the working pan matters more than the mixer.
  • Small batches are the right instinct, but each one restarts the clock and wastes a tail. A moderately bigger batch spread thin in a wide pan often nets more mud on the wall than three tiny ones.

Coat widths on square-edge joints

  • Flat joints: 300 → 400 → 500 mm
  • Outside corner: 150 → 200 → 250 mm per side
  • High must be removed, low gets filled by the next material. A knife bridges a valley — it cannot fill one. Never chase valleys, never a coat 4.

The ratio is a ceiling, not a promise. Water is what actually loses you the strength — a mix slackened on site to make it workable can drop a whole class.

  • Water-to-cement 0.45–0.60 by weight. Lower is stronger and harder to place; that tension is the whole game.
  • Cement per m³ Assumed, 40 kg bags: Class AA ~12 · Class A ~9 · Class B ~7.5 · Class C ~6.
  • Strength quoted at 28 days. Keep it damp — concrete cured wet for 7 days is dramatically stronger than concrete left to dry out.
  • Do not size a structural pour from a cheat sheet. Anything carrying load gets an engineer and a real spec. This card is for judging what a delivery or a helper is actually mixing.

  • Epoxy primer has a 7-day topcoat window. Past that it cures to a slick inert surface and the maker says re-prime. Scuff with 220 if you overshoot. Verified
  • Alkyd needs to fully cure, then get primed, before anything water-based goes over it.
  • Whole fibre-cement joint stack runs about 4 calendar days to paint. The days are material transitions — Knauf to Davies, Davies to sand, primer to paint. All the Knauf coats compress into one day.
  • Peeling while rolling primer over fresh skim means the putty skinned over dust. Primer water re-softens latex putty and roller shear finds the weak bond. Scrape, sand, re-skim, spot re-prime — and never re-roll a section that has started to tack.

  • No alkyd anything directly on bare zinc. The rule underneath all the others.
  • For galvanized, non-alkyd is necessary but not sufficient — the primer must also be labelled for galvanized. Sticking to zinc is a separate problem from saponification.
  • Alkyd enamel is the universal topcoat. It goes over every primer above, once cured.

Stroke rules

  • Finishing strokes run parallel to the joint. Cross-strokes are for loading and embedding only.
  • Feather by taking the outer edge of the blade to zero pressure, then one light steeper pass down the centre.
  • Never dead-stop mid-joint. Run the stroke off the end.
  • Starved strokes leave a ridge mid-stroke. Load a fat rope, match stroke length to the load, half-lap the overlaps, and tilt the wet-side blade corner up.
  • Coat exit criteria: coat 2 is flat, not smooth. Coat 3 is width and level. Streaky but flat is finished — skip coat 3 on any joint that already sits flat under the 350.
  • Davies skim is creamier than Knauf. Butter it lighter.

Water

Positive versus negative side

Apply to any damp wall or leak question, before choosing a product.

Coatings are consumables. Detailing is permanent. Ask where the water is coming from before asking what to coat it with.

Flashing, capping, drainage, grade and roof edges stop water with no maintenance clock attached. A membrane is only a backstop for what the detailing missed. If a leak has a specific source, fixing that source is the one part of the job you do once.

  • Negative-side coating is not a bodge when all three hold: the positive face is genuinely inaccessible, the water is low pressure (wind-driven rain or damp, not a water table), and the product is actually rated for negative hydrostatic pressure. Ordinary primers, sealers and elastomerics are not.
  • What negative side does not fix: the wall stays saturated. Dissolved salts crystallise at the coating interface and that pressure is what eventually lifts it. Removing all efflorescence first buys years.

Standing conduit rules

  • Never share a conduit between power and data.
  • Pull string in every conduit, every time. Conduit is permanent, cable is not.
  • Oversize one trade size, and run spares while the walls are open.
  • Budget 360° of total bend between pull points. Plan the pull boxes before bending anything.
  • Conduit goes in first, cable after the wet trades.
  • EMT is wrong outdoors. Use RSC, IMC, or PVC schedule 40/80.

Cable

Telling copper from copper-clad aluminium

Counterfeit network cable is common locally, and the give-away is resistance, not the jacket print.

Loop-test a 100 m box with a multimeter. Real copper reads 17–19 Ω. Copper-clad aluminium reads 27–29 Ω.

  • Price is the first tell. A box selling 40% under the going rate is not a bargain.
  • Belden 7814A reference: Cat6 U/UTP, 24 AWG solid bare copper, 250 MHz, 5.8 mm OD, about ₱12,500 per 305 m. Verified
  • Keystone jacks and a patch panel. No crimped plugs in a permanent link, ever.
  • 24 AWG is thin for power over Ethernet on long runs.
  • Indoor-rated cable does not go outdoors. An outdoor drop needs outdoor-rated cable and a grounded surge protector.

Angle grinder accessories

  • Makita DGA402 — 100 mm, 11,000 RPM, spindle M10 × 1.5 (measured).
  • Buying rule: M10 × 1.5, and rated above 11,000 RPM.
  • M10 × 1.25 does not fit and galls the spindle. Makita uses both pitches across its range, so check.
  • Measure pitch across 10 thread crests: 12.5 mm means 1.25, 15 mm means 1.5.

Before buying anything

  • Check what is already on hand first. Deliberate over-buying to avoid repeat hardware runs means multiple cans of the same thing exist — so never judge work-done from how full a can is. Test the surface, not the inventory.

A fast estimate, so nothing gets printed that is cheaper on a shelf.

  • Filament runs about ₱0.80 per gram at ₱800 per kg. Assumed
  • Power adds roughly ₱2–2.50 per hour at 150–200 W. Assumed
  • Almost always print: custom-fit parts — brackets sized to actual gear, adapters, Gridfinity. There is no off-the-shelf equivalent, so the comparison does not apply.
  • Almost always buy: fasteners, bearings, and anything mass injection-moulded.
  • Close call? Factor in your time, failed-print risk, and whether the alternative needs a trip.

  • Count the layers, not the top coat. A ten-year-old top coat over two older layers means the deepest coat predates the phase-out. The bottom layer sets the rule.

  • Intact paint is safe. Only disturbing it is dangerous.

Two rules that already cost something

  • Never put NiMH cells in a multimeter. Their lower cell voltage causes silent misreadings — the meter does not warn you, it just lies.
  • Check indoor versus outdoor rating before specifying any cable, enclosure or conduit for a run that leaves the building. Three of seven existing drops here are already cable failures.
